The R&D department at Pro Boat has been consistently working on its line of boats to give us RC enthusiasts a great selection of diverse boat options for us to choose from. One of Pro Boat’s latest creations builds off of its popular Blackjack line of electric powered catamarans, enter the Blackjack 24. It has a striking appearance, measures two feet long, comes out of the box nearly 100-percent ready for the water and is equipped with a powerful brushless motor and speed control, a reliable 2.4GHz radio system and waterproof electronics. My first impression of the Blackjack 24 was that this smaller boat will not come close to offering the same awesome performance found with the larger Blackjack 29. Is its size deceiving? Let’s find out.

Pro Boat did a great job offering a boat that bridges the gap between its tiny electric nine-inch boats and its larger boats that are in the 30-inch realm. The Blackjack 24 is small enough that it is easy to transport and run in smaller bodies of water yet large enough to be easy to work on and provide killer performance, especially when powered with a 3S LiPo battery pack.

OUT OF THE BOX
Once I removed the Blackjack 24 from its packaging, I was struck by how brilliant the red and black colors of the hull are in person as opposed to the pictures on the box. These colors work extremely well with the Blackjack 24’s distinctive graphics layout and sleek racing hull design, it is one sharp-looking catamaran. Along with the boat itself, Pro Boat includes the ECX 2-channel, 2.4GHz pistol grip transmitter. It is a no-frills looking radio, but it is equipped with all the necessary features you would need. Located near the steering wheel are the throttle and steering trim knobs, perfect for making quick adjustments while running the boat. Under the plastic cover on top of the transmitter is the on/ off switch, battery level indicator, steering and throttle reversing switches and knobs for adjusting steering and throttle dual rate. It is powered with four “AA” batteries and this keeps the radio super lightweight.
ABS plastic is utilized to form the catamaran’s hull which helps to make the Blackjack 24 very light. Without the battery installed, the boat weighs only 2 pounds and 14.2 ounces. This means less power is required to make this boat move really fast. The canopy is held in place with two metal pins at the front that slide into holes in the hull and at the rear of the canopy are two metal thumb screws to keep it secure. Each of the metal pins is held in place with an E-clip which holds it loosely. This makes it a bit troublesome to insert and remove the canopy. A foam rubber-type gasket lines the groove where the canopy comes into contact with the hull. This setup is not intended as a watertight seal, but will help keep the water that finds its way into the hull to a minimum. For the water that does make it into the hull, don’t worry, Pro Boat equipped the Blackjack 24 with waterproof electronics and a convenient drain plug installed in the stern. If you have ever tried to get all of the water out of a hull that does not have a drain plug, you know how difficult it is and understand the value of having one.
Inside the hull, you will find a one-piece tray where all the electronics are mounted. It should be noted that Pro Boat put out an addendum for the radio tray where they found that some of the trays were not properly adhered to the hull at the factory. The fix is easy. Attach the tray to the hull using some CA (Cyanoacrylate) glue. Go online to view the actual addendum for more specific details. A way to know if your Blackjack 24 is affected is by looking for a large green inspection dot on the tray near the motor. If your boat has the green dot, it was assembled correctly and no action is needed.
Mounted on the electronics tray you will find a Spektrum S603 standard servo tasked with steering duties. Just ahead of the servo is the ECX receiver which has the bind button and the on/off switch attached to it. On the on/off switch, there is also a battery chemistry button so that you can switch between LiPo, NiMH and NiCd battery packs. This is an important feature so that you don’t run the voltage down too far when using a LiPo pack and therefore ruin it. Harnessing the power to the brushless motor is a Dynamite 30amp, water-cooled speed control. It is capable of running off of a 3S LiPo pack to help make the Blackjack 24 wicked fast.
The muscle behind the Blackjack 24 is a powerful Dynamite 2000Kv brushless in runner, 4-pole motor. Like the speed control, it is cooled by the water-cooling system which is vital for a high speed boat with an enclosed hull. A hole in the rudder is the water pick-up for the cooling system where water is routed via rubber tubing through the speed control, then to the water jacket on the motor and it then exits out the port side of the hull.
Quality machined aluminum is used for the running gear found on the stern. The rudder is offset to the right of the propeller shaft. This is a common design for boats built for speed. Moving the rudder out from behind the prop allows the boat to maintain speed in turns while still allowing plenty of control of the boat. The position of the propeller shaft is adjustable via the aluminum strut so that you can tune the boat for specific water conditions. Curiously, the prop that came on my boat is 1.62×2.06, but the instructions and the Pro Boat website has it listed as a 1.34×2.06. I assume it was a running change where it was found that the larger prop enhanced the 24’s performance.
ON THE WATER
I started off with a 2S LiPo battery pack to test the Pro Boat Blackjack 24. Before hitting the water, I double-checked its operation to make sure everything was functioning properly. Once the battery was plugged in and the transmitter was switched on, I powered up the speed control and after a couple seconds and beeps, the system was calibrated and ready for action. All the controls worked correctly so I tightened the thumb screws on the canopy and placed the boat in the water. Gently pulling the trigger causes the prop to quickly churn up the water and moves the boat ahead briskly with the bow slightly pointing skyward. As you input more power to the motor, the boat in-turn speeds up and gets up on plane. The Blackjack 24 rides nice and level across the surface of the water and looks great doing it. Its super brilliant colors make it very easy to see on the water even when it is a good distance away. Steering input is met with instant response and the boat will turn quickly while also staying level. It was apparent to me that the offset rudder did enhance its ability to maintain speed in corners, although it does steer a bit better to the right than to the left. This is a trade-off I am willing to accept in order to maintain cornering speed.
Once comfortable with its handling, it was time for some full-throttle runs. I found the 24 to be quite fast with a 2S LiPo battery and very stable at full speed. It even looks like a full-scale race catamaran, especially when running at high speed toward you as it throws a big roost of water in its wake. While at speed it is possible to make quick direction changes and this did not unsettle the hull either, that is unless there was a lot of chop on the water’s surface. Those times created some cool exits from turns as I fed in throttle to power out of a turn when the water was choppy and the inside sponson would lift slightly out of the water. Luckily the hull stayed controllable and regained its composure quickly. The 24 is so stable that it will be a great boat for someone who is just starting out with faster RC boats. The Blackjack 24 will allow them to get accustomed to driving fast and then once they are more experienced, they can jump up to a 3S LiPo battery pack for even more high-speed performance. Running the Blackjack 24 on 3S totally transforms it into an awesomely fast boat. Stabbing the trigger on the transmitter will cause the bow to pop out of the water like a motorcycle doing a wheelie. Smooth input on the trigger gets the boat up on plane quickly without it launching out of the water and it rockets up to full speed in a flash. Now with the extra speed on tap, you will have to come off the throttle to enter turns. With 3S the Blackjack 24 is hitting speeds in the 30mpg range, making the driving experience extremely fun and exciting

There is no question that I underestimated the Pro Boat Blackjack 24…don’t let its smaller size fool you. This catamaran is fast when run on a 2S LiPo and just crazy fast with a 3S battery pack. You also benefit from great handling with the catamaran hull design, its light weight and its offset rudder, which makes it easy to drive this boat at most any speed. I really like that its smaller size made it more convenient to transport and store yet you are not short-changed with less performance. I also found that the included electronics worked very well and made for an issue-free testing experience.

On the Nars website it is described as ’Berry with gold shimmer’, I would say it is pale golden plum colour, it’s really pretty and ideal for autumn. It reminds me of Mac Trax eyeshadow as it has that same two tone colour effect but is a lighter in tone.
I’m not keen on too much shimmer so I try to tap those off before applying. It is very finely milled and feels luxurious. Even though it has a bit more shimmer than I prefer I have to admit it does give a lovely glow and colour to my cheeks. It hasn’t replaced my love for my Mac Plum Foolery blush, I’m quite loyal to this as I love the effect it gives my cheeks.
The Casino bronzer was the icing on the cake for me in this duo as I had no idea whether it would show up on me (Mac NC44, Nars Sheer Glow Cadiz foundations) so that I could use it for contouring, thankfully it shows up quite a bit and is buildable too, so perfect for contouring.
On the Nars website it is described as ’dark brown with gold shimmer’, which is pretty accurate. If you see the swatch below on my arm it looks like quite a warm colour, it compliments my skin which has yellow/olive undertones. I don’t notice any shimmer on my skin.

Carson area casinos have been closed for over 70 days but operators say they haven’t been idly waiting for permission to reopen.
Customers can expect pretty dramatic changes as they return to their favorite restaurants, bars and gaming floors.
Those include numerous signs, including on the floors to control who goes where and how close they come to each other, plexiglass shields and sanitizer stations.
The Carson Nugget, Casino Fandango, the Max, Carson Valley Inn, Bodines, Slotworld and Sharkey’s in Minden-Gardnerville are all planning to reopen most if not all of their operations on Thursday, June 4, the first day casinos are allowed to resume operation.
Most plan to open at 6 a.m. that day. Sharkey’s and Bodines will wait until 7 a.m.
All have been getting their facilities ready in anticipation of reopening, an effort that required different levels of changes to the layout of slots, table games, restaurants and bars.
It also gave all a chance to take care of deferred maintenance and do some serious deep cleaning of everything.
The other major task, as Fandango manager Court Cardinal put it, is “we’ve got to get our furloughed employees unfurloughed.”
That process, required training staff in the new rules imposed by gaming regulators including new cleaning processes, sanitization and social distancing, according to Edye Kaplan of the Max Casino.
All the casino officials say employees will all wear masks and practice frequent sanitization. And all will provide masks for customers who want them.
Probably the most dramatic changes will be at the Carson Nugget that CEO Dean DiLullo says has undergone a complete remodel since the governor ordered casinos closed to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
“We spent a ton of money to modernize the Carson Nugget during the lockdown,” he said.
That includes painting, a completely new slot machine system, new sports bar near the entrance, a new Winner’s Club and deep cleaning of kitchens and everything else in the building. They also took the opportunity to repair and re-stripe all the surrounding parking lots.
Alatte Café will be open daily as will Angelinas with the Gourmet Room open Friday and Saturday.
“If you walk into the Nugget, you would not recognize it,” he said.

At Casino Fandango, one of the capital’s newer properties, Cardinal said the shut down was a perfect time to do a lot of deferred maintenance that’s hard to accomplish in a 24/7 business.

Because of the Fandango’s floor plan, they’ve had their premier restaurant, Duke’s Steakhouse, open for two weeks. The trick is they could give customers access to the restaurant from an outside door on Curry Street without them having to walk through the casino to get there. Cardinal said he was very pleased with the customer response to opening the steakhouse.
When they opened Duke’s, “we were packed.”

All restaurants will be open except the buffet.
“I’m not sure we’ll see buffets again,” he said.
Cardinal said the other service that won’t be back anytime soon is valet parking because of the same health safety concerns.
He said slot capacity will be about 50 percent but that there will be far fewer counter and bar stools.
Cardinal said they are also ready to honor the gift cards customers have been winning through their online games at the Fandango website during the shut down.
“We’ve given away thousands of dollars in instant Amazon gift cards,” he said.
He said the layout of his slot pods is such that less modifications to the floor plan were required to accommodate social distancing than other casinos.

Last time I looked 1/32’ is around .030, whereas fret tangs are typically .020 + a bit. The Dremmel isn’t famous for its bearing and bit stability and this coupled with skinny bit run-out seem like a recipe for disaster (unless you intend to use the full glue in fret ’Teeter’ method). Maybe I missed something - anybody?
*This is just a quick and dirty fret slotting jig, using a dremel and the mini saw attachment. It cuts good but it’s hard to move the fence due to friction. Now that i know it works I’ll be making.
*Following on from NotAnotherHobby’s post about fret slotting with a table saw, it got me thinking about alternative saw blades to StewMacs fret cutting saw blade (at $100) as this seems pretty specialist. Has anyone tried using slitting saws, used for milling and jewellery work? There is a nice variety of kerf’s and diameter blades.

I agree, the Dremel is too sloppy.
I make custom fret slot cleaning devices out of feeler gauges. You can pick your thickness & create the correct shape & edge using the Dremel. They’re plenty ’accurate’ for that.
BTW: A livestock rancher friend of mine told me that the curved fret cleaning blades Stew-Mac sells are simply pig castration device blades available at most farm supply stores dirt cheap. If you need extras or some to customize, there’s your source. I have no info (on purpose) on the dreaded device they’re used in.

Recently, I dremeled teeth into some feeler gauges, a la the unlamented, ’Norman’s Nutfiles’, to clean out fretslots one ten thou at a time. This worked spectacularly well! Don’t pull all the way through, to keep from getting chipouts.
I’m thinking that these could be mounted in handles of some sort, to act as a depthstop.

I do have a Foredom tool, but either way I guess the extra wide .0313 1/32’ slot is not what I am after considering standard fret tang sizes as Rusty mentioned. I like the feeler gauge ideas. I did serrate one after seeing those ’nut files’ on eBay a while back. It does make a crude little saw. I will try that in the slots. I would love see a photo Jeffrey when you get settled. Thomas I just use a Stanly knife (the hollow handle one) with a normal blade ground into a hook configuration with the Dremmel sanding sleeve 1/2 inch variety to give the inside part of the hook. The pointy end and blade edge is ground flat so it doesn’t cut into the bottom of the slot. The width is just right for most used fret slots. The full size handle gives good control and for bound guitars its easy to work from close to each edge inwards so as to not damage the binding with a slip.
The pig castration blades (that makes me shiver to even write it) that Paul mentioned are best use for ’nut’ slots (just kidding)..........

As Rusty said, experiment with utility knife blades, there are all sorts of shapes and thicknesses. I like the upholstery cutter as it is hook-shaped, it only needs a light pass on the belt sander to get to correct thickness.
I always use my slot cutting saw on unbound boards. I would take a junior hacksaw blade and cut it to piece and glue it to a long piece of dowel and use that on bound boards. Make some test cuts with various blades that are available to you. Either the butchers hackblade or junior hacksaw blades are app .020’ kerf.
As for the slot width whenever I see the frets were glued with CA, I cannot really tell what’s the real slot width was as CA tends to coat the sides and narrows the slot quite a bit.Permalink Reply by Mark A. Kane on July 20, 2013 at 12:51pm
The dremel works great but like any other technique requires practice, as well as the correct bits. What you need are micro endmills. I buy them 15-20 at a time in sizes from .018 through .025’. They are available on the web starting at around $12-15 each. I buy the carbide 2 flute, with a cut length of ~.080’.
I do a LOT of refretting and this method offers repeatable, consistent accuracy and speed. I use the dremel for almost every fret job I do, excluding (but sometimes including) compression refrets on old Martins. I’ve used the same dremel and Stew-Mac base since 1991 or so, with satisfactory results consistently (49 refrets this year so far, since opening my new shop in late February) The much-talked about runout is a non-issue, but the key is practice and developing the feel for the tool. *1When is refretting a guitar necessary?
Performing a complete refret job is about as big as a job can be in guitar lutherie – but don’t let that scare you away. If it’s done poorly, you can usually salvage the job by pulling the frets again and giving it another try. It’s an extremely valuable skill to have, and the core requirement for a perfect action. If you’ve read the fretdress guide, you already know some of the major steps required for refretting.
I don’t know if I’ve done a good job convincing you that this is a task you should endeavor, but I can assure you that by the time you’re finished, you’ll have a much deeper understanding and of the guitar’s neck mechanics as a bonus. This knowledge will help you diagnose and perform any fret or action-related jobs with more confidence and accuracy.
Learning how to refret your guitar will also give you most of the skills required for fretting a blank fretboard. This is required reading for anyone wanting to build their own guitar.
When diagnosing a guitar, you need to know when to perform a complete refret, partial refret, or a regular fretdress. There’s a huge difference in required effort. A fretdress can solve a lot of issues on its own, but sometimes you need to address problems at the root of the matter: the fretboard itself. Let’s look at some neck issues and see what’s required to fix them:1. High Fret
Cause: Fretboard shrinkage (dried wood), improperly seated fret, or pushed inward from a fall or being struck.
Solution: Partial refret2. Rising Tongue
Cause: Mostly affects bolt-on necks. Can be caused by a number of things – humidity changes, an improperly set truss-rod, poorly selected neck wood, poor fretwork, etc. Many times, the issue isn’t with the fretboard itself, but the neck wood.
Solution: Complete refret3. Twisted Neck
Cause: Similar to a rising tongue, there are a number of issues that could cause a twisted neck – but it mostly comes down to poor wood selection.
Solution: Throw the neck in the garbage. Aside from that, a fretdress or a complete refret can help counter the issue by leveling the plane again. Shimming the neck is also helpful in some cases, but I’d prefer to throw it in the garbage if that’s the case. This is not a permanent solution, but sometimes the neck wood can settle after a period (usually when it’s not properly dried/aged at the time of milling). In such cases, a refret can restore the neck’s function for an extended time – but you won’t know until you try it.4. Worn Frets
Cause: Playing + time + general wear = flattened crowns, chips & notches, dead skin/grime buildup, uneven action, etc.
Solution: A fretdress will solve most cases, but fret-wire has a lifespan and you’ll need to assess whether there’s enough metal left to take another dressing without bringing the frets too low. If so, a complete refret will be needed.5. Player DiscomfortCutting Fret Slots With A Dremel Bits
Cause: This is a given really – if a guitarist has any issues with their fretboard’s radius or fret wire thickness, there’s no reason not to make the change.

*Support the neck with shot bags or a good fitting caul.
*Protect the guitar.
*Guitar should be set up with desired string gauge and tuning. Especially be sure that the relief is set to .012”.
*This is the starting point for a refret, fretdress, or initial fretting of a new instrument. This method takes into consideration the reaction of the wood and trussrod to the string tension. This state becomes the constant from which the plane of the fingerboard is defined.Step 2 – Remove the frets.
*Oil rosewood and ebony fingerboards liberally with lemon oil to condition and reduce chipping. In some cases you may leave a heavy coat of oil sit overnight. Drip or spray a little water on the fingerboard to produce steam. Heat the frets with a clothes iron or soldering iron until they bubble and steam. Rest iron on a wood block while not on the frets.

*Repeat process with finer grits of sandpaper up to 240 on the bar.Step 7 – Re-slot the fretboard with a Dremel.
*Slot fret slots to the proper depth with a Dremel tool and precision router base. Stewmac #1180 tapered fret slotting bits are best for this job. Be careful not to cut through the filled slot ends. Gradually work bit down to 1/32nd inch deeper than the fret tang.
*Stop the Dremel and clean off the bit as it accumulates. You will have to clean the slot with your slot cleaning tool and vacuum cleaner several times as you use the Dremel to deepen the slots.
*In some cases the slot may need to be deeper if it requires excessive force to insert fret.
*Be careful with the bit – they are expensive. Work slowly and deliberate. Control the machine. Leave pro dress strips 1/16” wide.Step 8 – Bevel fret slot edges and polish the fretboard.
*Now polish the fingerboard with 400, 600, 800, and 1000 grit sandpaper by hand.
*Bevel the top of the slots with a three corner file.
*Clean and vacuum the slots one last time.Step 9 – Radius and cut the fret wire.
*Choose the fretwire that is closest to the existing or desired fret size.
*Clean fretwire with naptha.
*Radius the fret wire.
*Match radius to fingerboard with slight overbend.
*Cut 3/4” off each end of the radiused fretwire section. This is the part that the radius machine misses and leaves straight.
*It helps to have a fret wire index with 24 holes.
*Cut fretwire 1/4” longer than the fret slot on all fret slots.
*Nip fret tangs with the fret tang nipper 1/32” inside of the pro-dress strips.
*Clean any remaining tang with a small file, careful not to get into the crown.Step 10 – Hammer the frets.
*Test fit a couple frets into the tongue of the fingerboard. It should require only heavy finger pressure or light tapping with the fret hammer. This is usually where the slots need to be deepened.
*Try to remove test fret wire without bending it. Make a new fret if needed.
*Dampen fretboard with water to soften wood and increase working glue time.
*Work wood glue into frets 3 or 4 at a time. Tap fret firmly into slots with a deadblow hammer.
*Clean the remaining glue and see that the fret has seated tightly against the fingerboard.
*If fret will not seat against fingerboard, either the slot is not deep enough or the fret wire is improperly radiused.
*Re-examine slots and frets and deepen before proceeding.
*If the first frets seat properly, proceed with the rest of the fingerboard. Leave a little water after cleaning the glue to slow the glue from setting.Step 11 – Clamp, clip, and bevel the frets.
*With all frets properly seated, clamp 3/8” steel rod 1/4” from the fretboard edge.
*Use 4” – 6” blocks as clamping cauls. Tape helps keep the rods in the proper place.
*After at least 2 hour drying time, remove the clamps.
*Clip frets flush at the end of the fingerboard with flat ground fret cutters, not the fret pullers.
*If wood strips were not used, the pro-dress can be achieved by filling the fret slot ends with wood dust and glue.
*Let it dry completely then sand or file flush. Try to stay off the finish.
*Bevel fret ends with a bevel file or straight file. I prefer a 15 degree bevel.
*File the sharp corner of the fret ends with a safe-edged flat file or 3-corner file.
*Proceed with normal fret dress procedure starting with 220 grit paper. If everything was done properly the bar will lightly kiss the top of all the frets. Touch up the fretboard edge with wipe-on poly or French polish and pumice.
